If you have ever stood over a checkout, unsure whether you are buying an attar, a perfume oil or an eau de parfum, you are in good company. These three words get used almost interchangeably online, yet they describe genuinely different things — different formulas, different ways of wearing them, and a very different experience on the skin.
This guide clears it up in plain terms, from someone who lives and breathes fragrance. By the end you will know exactly which format suits you, and why the answer often comes down to how you actually want to wear a scent rather than which one is "best".
The three formats, defined properly
Attar (also spelled ittar). An attar is a traditional, oil-based fragrance with roots in South Asia, the Middle East and the wider Arabian world. Classically it is distilled from botanicals — rose, oud, musk, saffron, sandalwood — into a carrier oil, contains no alcohol, and is worn in tiny amounts directly on the skin. Attars are prized for their intimacy and staying power.
Perfume oil. A perfume oil is the modern, broader cousin of the attar. Aromatic materials are blended into an oil base rather than an alcohol base, so it shares the attar's alcohol-free, close-to-skin character while allowing a much wider palette of scents — fresh, floral, woody, gourmand and everything between. Every perfume oil in the Samad Fragrances range is alcohol-free and designed to be dabbed or rolled onto pulse points.
Eau de Parfum (EDP). This is what most people picture when they think "perfume": aromatic compounds dissolved in an alcohol base and sprayed. The alcohol flashes off the skin quickly, lifting the scent into the air around you. EDP is the format behind the classic spray bottle. In our own range, Exotic Oud is an Eau de Parfum — an alcohol-based spray, not a perfume oil or attar. It is the one EDP we make, and we will always label it that way so you know exactly what you are getting.
The differences that actually matter
Definitions are one thing; how a fragrance behaves is what you feel every day. Here is where the three formats genuinely part ways.
Longevity. Oil-based fragrances — attars and perfume oils — tend to last a long time because oil evaporates far more slowly than alcohol. A small amount can stay with you through a working day. A well-made eau de parfum also lasts well, but the alcohol carries the top notes off faster, which is part of why a spray smells so bright the moment you apply it.
Projection and sillage. This is the biggest practical difference. An EDP projects — it fills the space around you and announces itself, which is exactly what you want for an evening out or a special occasion. A perfume oil or attar sits closer to the skin, creating a more personal "scent bubble" that people notice when they are near you rather than across a room. Neither is better; they are simply different intentions.
Application. Oils are dabbed or rolled onto pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears — and a little goes a long way. An eau de parfum is sprayed onto skin or clothing and covers more ground per application. If you like precision and control, oils are a joy. If you like a quick, generous spritz, an EDP suits you.
Skin feel and alcohol. Because perfume oils and attars are alcohol-free, many people with sensitive or dry skin find them gentler and more comfortable, with none of the drying sharpness alcohol can bring. This is one of the main reasons oil-based fragrance has grown so quickly in the UK. An EDP's alcohol is not a flaw — it is what gives a spray its lift — but it is worth knowing if your skin reacts easily.
So which one is right for you?
Choose an alcohol-free perfume oil or attar if you want:
- A long-lasting, intimate scent that stays close to the skin
- Something gentle on sensitive or dry skin
- Precise, controlled application you can top up discreetly
- Alcohol-free fragrance for personal, religious or lifestyle reasons
Choose an eau de parfum if you want:
- Noticeable projection that fills the room
- A bright, immediate opening the moment you spray
- A generous, effortless spritz for evenings and occasions
Plenty of fragrance lovers keep both: an oil for everyday closeness and an EDP for when they want to make an entrance.
How the Samad Fragrances range fits
We are, first and foremost, an alcohol-free perfume oil house — with one deliberate exception, which we will come to.
Our oils are built around distinct scent characters, so there is something for very different moods:
- Blue Mystral is our fresh, aquatic signature — a floral-ocean character, cool and invigorating, like a clean breeze coming off the sea. It is the one to reach for when you want something bright, modern and easy to wear.
- Golden Rose goes in the opposite, cosier direction: a warm, woody oud fragrance with a rosy heart. Rich and enveloping, it is made for cooler days and evenings.
- Damask Musk sits between the two — a floral, spicy, musky blend with real depth and sensuality, elegant without being loud.
New to oils and not sure where to start? Our Discovery Set lets you sample the range on your own skin before committing to a full size — the smartest way to find your signature.
And the exception: Exotic Oud is our Eau de Parfum — an alcohol-based spray, opulent and saffron-lit with a lush, oud-rich heart. It is the choice when you want projection and presence rather than the close-to-skin intimacy of an oil. Because it is an EDP and not an oil, it wears and applies differently from everything above, and that is exactly the point.
The bottom line
Attar, perfume oil and eau de parfum are not rungs on a quality ladder — they are three different ways to wear a scent. Oils and attars whisper; eau de parfum speaks up. Once you know which conversation you want to have, choosing becomes easy.
If you would like a gentle, long-lasting, alcohol-free scent that stays beautifully close to the skin, our perfume oils are a wonderful place to begin — and the Discovery Set means you can try before you decide.
