Arabian Perfume Oils UK: A Buyer's Guide to Attar and Oud

Arabian perfume oils, also called attar or ittar, are concentrated, alcohol-free fragrances applied directly to the skin. They are built around notes like oud, rose, amber, musk and saffron, and because they contain no alcohol to evaporate, they typically wear for at least 12 hours, rather than the four to six of a standard spray.

What is an Arabian perfume oil?

An attar perfume is a highly concentrated fragrance oil made without alcohol. The tradition runs back centuries across the Middle East and South Asia, where perfume was worn as oil long before alcohol-based perfumery emerged in Europe.

The practical difference is how it behaves on skin. An alcohol-based perfume projects hard in the first hour because alcohol is volatile and lifts the scent into the air, and then it fades. An oil has nothing to evaporate, so it warms with your body and releases slowly. It sits closer to you, and it lasts considerably longer.

The five notes worth knowing

• Oud. Resin from the agarwood tree. Deep, woody, sometimes smoky. Widely considered the centrepiece of Arabian perfumery. Our take on it is Exotic Oud, our luxury oud eau de parfum (alcohol-based), with Oud Spirit as its alcohol-free perfume oil equivalent.
• Rose. Velvety and softly sweet. Frequently paired with oud, where the two balance each other.
• Amber. Warm, balsamic and faintly powdery. Adds depth and a sense of enclosure to a blend.
• Musk. Soft and skin-like. Modern musks are synthetic, which is both more consistent and, unlike historic animal sources, sustainable.
• Saffron. Leathery and slightly bitter, with a golden warmth. A little transforms an oud composition.

Why they last longer

Concentration and the absence of alcohol. Perfume oils carry a higher proportion of fragrance material than most sprays, which is why a single dab is enough, and why a 10ml bottle lasts far longer than its size suggests.

Realistically, expect at least 12 hours on skin. Often a full day and beyond. Anyone promising several days is overselling. How long it actually lasts depends heavily on your skin. Well-moisturised skin holds fragrance oil considerably longer than dry skin.

How to apply an attar properly

1. Moisturise first with an unscented lotion. This is the single biggest factor in longevity.
2. Apply one dab to each pulse point, wrists, either side of the neck, inner elbows.
3. Dab, never rub. Rubbing breaks the fragrance down and shortens its life.
4. Let it absorb for a minute before dressing.

If you want more projection for an occasion, apply the oil first and mist an eau de parfum over the top. The oil gives the alcohol-based top notes something to hold onto.

How to choose your first one

Start with the note family you already know you like. If you gravitate to warm, woody or smoky scents, begin with oud. If you prefer soft and floral, start with rose or musk. If you want something you can wear to an office without thinking about it, look at the fresher, citrus-led end of the range.

Then test properly. Fragrance oil interacts with individual skin chemistry, so the same attar genuinely smells different on two people. A few seconds on a paper strip tells you very little. Storing perfume oil

Keep bottles somewhere cool and dark, away from direct sunlight and radiators, and cap them tightly between uses. Heat and light degrade fragrance oil faster than anything else. Stored properly, a bottle will hold its character for years.
