How to Store Perfume Oil (and How Long It Lasts)

A good perfume oil is a small luxury — and with a little care, it will stay smelling its best for a long time. Fragrance is surprisingly sensitive to its surroundings, so where and how you store it genuinely matters. Here is how to look after yours.

Keep it cool, dark and dry

The three great enemies of fragrance are heat, light and humidity. Each can slowly alter the scent and shorten its life:

  • Heat speeds up the breakdown of aromatic ingredients, so keep bottles away from radiators, windowsills and anywhere that gets warm.
  • Sunlight can degrade a fragrance over time — store it out of direct light, ideally in a drawer, box or cupboard.
  • Humidity is why the bathroom, tempting as it is, is actually one of the worst places to keep perfume. The constant damp and temperature swings are not kind to it.

Close it properly

Keep the cap or applicator firmly closed when you are not using it. Air exposure gradually affects the scent, so a well-sealed bottle lasts longer. A cool, dark drawer is close to ideal.

How long does perfume oil last?

Stored properly, our perfume oils keep their quality for around 24 months from opening. After that the fragrance may slowly start to change or fade. Signs a fragrance is past its best include a noticeable shift in colour or a scent that smells “off” or sour compared with how you remember it.
