Oud — also called agarwood or oudh — is a dark, aromatic resin that forms inside agar (Aquilaria) trees when they respond to a particular mould infection. Uninfected agar wood is pale and odourless; only the infected heartwood produces the deep, complex scent perfumers prize. Because the process is rare in the wild and slow to cultivate, genuine oud is among the most expensive ingredients in the world — which is why it has long been associated with luxury.
In a finished fragrance, oud reads as woody and smoky with a leathery, almost animalic depth. It is rarely worn alone: perfumers pair it with brighter or sweeter notes to round it out.
Why oud is so highly valued
Three things drive oud's status. First, rarity — only a small proportion of agar trees produce resin, and sustainable cultivation takes years. An eau de parfum projects more openly in the first hour and wears 6–10 hours — better suited to evenings and occasions. How to wear oud perfume
Oud is potent, so less is more. Apply one dab (oil) or one spray (EDP) to warm, moisturised pulse points — the wrists and either side of the neck — and let it settle without rubbing. Rubbing crushes the top notes and shortens the wear. Oud suits cooler weather and evenings especially well, as cold air holds the heavier base notes close to the skin. For daytime, a single application to the wrists is plenty.
